Debbi asked me yesterday if I worry to much about the exhibitions, actually that is very funny because it did kept me busy yesterday. Yesterday I had an appointment with a very chic restaurant that has also exhibition space. The appointment was managed by a friend of mine, the space is very beautiful and get many visitors. There are some critical points, the pieces all have to be the same size and al have very subdued colours. That was not what I wanted, but I can live with that. The owner says that they always sell very much (that is something that you can’t count on) but than she had some more conditions. She doesn’t charge anything for the exhibition but when it’s over she want 1 piece in return and also she wanted everything framed. I have made myself very clear on that point: I don’t frame these works (maybe some others in the future, but not this ones) I asked her if she would go ahead with it otherwise we better could stop right away. When it was hanging very flat, she could live with it, so that point we passed. But keeping one piece afterwards? I have counted things, it could be that I am selling much, they people that eat there are really fortunate, but my work isn’t that cheap, so actually I pay a LOT to hang there. If you dived it over all the sold pieces (without commission, by the way) it might have been worse, but I am still wondering, shall I except this conditions? And I had such a headache yesterday……what do you think?

Anders zoals in de advocatuur: no cure-no pay
Hi!
I have only been creating artwork for just over six years, but I've already had five solo exhibits. I am very fortunate, however, that my studio is located in a space with thirteen other studios. One is rented by a very successful, well known, and prolific oil painter named Stephen Chesley. He has always been my mentor...in the "business of art". He is wise and has experienced both the "ups" and "downs" of exhibiting. He would say..."Sure, give the place a piece...as long as they GUARENTEE a certain amount of sales!" You should have a contract. This provision should be in writing. They get a piece of your work...if, and only if, they sell a fair percentage of artwork!
I am also lucky in another respect...my "day job" is being the owner of a frame shop! That's always been the easy part for me!
Susan
