De laatste jaren koop ik geen ‘gewone’ geprinte stoffen meer. Meestal koop ik alleen nog witte katoen en heel af en toe koop ik nog wel organza, flanel of dunne kaasdoek.
Organza gebruik ik meer voor de embellisher of om te smelten, de andere drie om te verven.
Kaasdoek is helaas moeilijk aan te komen, in ieder geval de hele dunne doorzichtige soort (scrim) is in Nederland moeilijk te krijgen.
Flanel is een fantastische stof om te verven, hij pakt heel goed verf op en de kleuren zijn mooi diep en warm.
Ik vind de pluizige structuur ook wel grappig om verder te gebruiken, maar soms verander ik die ook weer. Voorbeeld hiervan is de quilt “The Rock”, ook dit is geverfde flanel, die ik hierna behandeld heb met een mengsel van verschillende textielverharders en polytex . Er zitten ongeveer 4 lagen op.
Een nadeel is dat de stof dusdanig hard is dat de quilt niet meer gevouwen kan worden en daarom lastig op te bergen.
The last few years I don’t buy “normal” printed fabric anymore. I only buy white calico and once in a while organza, flannel or scrim.
Organza I use on the embellisher or to melt, the other three for dyeing.
Scrim is hard to buy in the Netherlands, in any event the thin, clear kind.
Flannel is a lovely fabric to dye, it takes dye very well and the colours are rich and warm.
I like the soft structure to use, but sometimes I need to change that structure, like in the quilt “The Rock”. This is also flannel that I have painted whit a mix of textile hardener and polytex. It contains 4 layers.
The only disadvantage is that you can’t wind it anymore, so it’s difficult to put away.
