This is an old design that wasn't working, the middle piece was already quilted but I couldn't get the piece right. I cut it into three pieces and finally used the middle piece to make this quilt. The other two are still waiting for a purpose.
One of the things I like to do the most is designing. But sometimes it is also painful when it is not working. I usually don’t plan before; I always build up the piece. In the past I made a complete sketch and made a colour scheme for it. Now I am working with my fabric design (dyed fabric or mono print) and develop this design. In the latest issue of Quilting Arts was an article by Laura and Linda Kemshall what made me think of my own designing process. They start with a theme in mind, after that they make sketches and pictures and than work from that. So everyone has his own way I guess. For me it doesn’t work that way, when I plan the whole design before it never turns out the way I planned. Still I think it’s all right to work that way, because you’re more organized. So, maybe it’s back to the old way? Make a design at first; make a sketch to see what is ahead of you and than see how it takes off. Could be a surprise.

Jacqueline -I'm a bit like you also because if I plan something it never turns out the way it was planned.
GREAT piece!!!
I have tried to be like those who have taken C & G courses and do sketches and samples.
I start with a rough sketch but that's as far as it gets, the pieces take over and they usually don't look like what was drawn.
Lately, I've been going with what's in my head....
LOVE your blog!
I think that has worked out beautifully.
I find that no matter how much I design a piece once I start working on it, then it has a mind of it's own and I like that.
Jacqueline, I think it depends on the piece you are going to do as to whether or not a sketch needs to be done beforehand. I usually just jump in and go, but occasionally I will sketch out a design first.
I NEVER sketch out a design - but then I don't think I am artistic enough to do that!! I think this is great, and I'm sure the textures and colours look so much better for real!!
