Embroidery

The past two days I only cleaned up and tried to organise the chaos in my study. Everything is in boxes now, but there is no method in it. That’s because my books all have to move downstairs, when they are finally gone I have room for other things. It is also useless to bring a method in it at the moment, the day after tomorrow I have to put all material together for Rijswijk and everything is back to chaos again. Today I opened a closet that wasn’t opened for a long time and look what I found. An embroidery made by my grandmother in 1921. Once I had the intention to frame it but never could find the right frame. Now I am thinking about using it in one of my own works. The idea attracts me a lot, my grandmother died years ago, she was 10 years old when she embroidered this. I don’t know if you all know this, in the Netherlands we call it a : Merklap. I couldn’t find a translation for it. In that days there where no pattern books in Holland (or maybe they where to expensive) so girls learned the embroidery by just loaning a merklap from somebody else and copy them. The yarn is a bit worn out at some points, but the quality of the linen is pretty good. Now I have to find a background fabric that will match…. But first I have to finish the quilt for the Twentse Welle and after that my work for TIF March. It is a pity that the cleaning up took so much of my time but eventually I hope to get some profit out of it.

Hi Jacqueline
What a beautiful 'memory' piece you forund in the closet. I think you would call it a sampler in the UK.
The idea of using it in a piece you make yourself sounds wonderful as often these pieces look quite sterile just framed, I think and the continuity of you taking on would be please your grandmother no end, I'm sure.
As to the tidying up. it always seems such a lot of time spent with no return but I think it does make you more efficient and helps you working process if you can find what you want easily.
Thank you for your lovely comment on my blog post, I always feel a bit apprehensive when I publish something untried before !!!

Jacquline we call the embroidery a sampler- meaning a sample of stitch techniques.
I would still frame it-if it were mine--what a wonderful treasure your grand daughter would inherit.

I think this is very similar to our sampler where young girls practised their needlecraft. How wonderful if you can combine this with our modern day techniques.

It´s beautiful! Here in Sweden we called it for "Märkduk"

Such a wonderful piece from your Grandmother - it would be great used in one of your artworks, and then would be doubly treasured as it's handed down to the next generation.
Maybe you could come and tidy my work area for me!!??
