Designing

Dit is een oud ontwerp wat niet wilde lukken, het middelste paneel was al helemaal gequilt maar het lukte niet er 1 geheel van te maken. Ik heb het toen in drie stukken geknipt, en een van de delen hiervoor gebruikt. De andere twee wachten nog steeds op een bestemming.

This is an old design that wasn't working, the middle piece was already quilted but I couldn't get the piece right. I cut it into three pieces and finally used the middle piece to make this quilt. The other two are still waiting for a purpose.

Een van de dingen die ik het leukst vind om te doen is ontwerpen. Maar het is ook het meest pijnlijke als het een keer niet lukt. Ik plan eigenlijk nooit van tevoren meer, ik werk altijd opbouwend. Vroeger maakte ik een complete sketch met de kleuren van tevoren op de juiste plaats ingekleurd. Nu ga ik van mijn stofontwerp uit (gewoon de geverfde stof of een zeefdruk) en werk dit verder uit. In de Quilting Arts stond een artikel van Laura and Linda Kemshall wat me hierover aan het denken zette. Zij gaan uit van een thema, hierna gaan ze schetsen en foto’s maken en dit verder uitwerken. Iedereen werkt op zijn eigen manier dus. Voor mij werkt het niet meer zo, als ik alles van tevoren uitdenk valt het vaak tegen en wordt het niet zoals gepland. Toch denk ik wel dat het goed is om er eens op die manier meer bij stil te staan, je bent gerichter bezig. Dus misschien toch weer terug naar de oude manier? Van tevoren uitteken wat de bedoeling moet worden en dan zien hoe het uitpakt? Kan verrassend wezen.

One of the things I like to do the most is designing. But sometimes it is also painful when it is not working. I usually don’t plan before; I always build up the piece. In the past I made a complete sketch and made a colour scheme for it. Now I am working with my fabric design (dyed fabric or mono print) and develop this design. In the latest issue of Quilting Arts was an article by Laura and Linda Kemshall what made me think of my own designing process. They start with a theme in mind, after that they make sketches and pictures and than work from that. So everyone has his own way I guess. For me it doesn’t work that way, when I plan the whole design before it never turns out the way I planned. Still I think it’s all right to work that way, because you’re more organized. So, maybe it’s back to the old way? Make a design at first; make a sketch to see what is ahead of you and than see how it takes off. Could be a surprise.

The Red Pines

De ATC’s die ik in de vakantie heb gemaakt zijn nog van een restje stof wat ik over had. Ik heb deze stof gebruikt om een aantal kleine werken te maken. De serie heet: The Red Pines, en bestaat uit een mono druk op stof, gevoerd met vilt en bewerkt met de naaimachine. Ze zijn niet zo heel erg groot.

The ATC’s that I made during my holiday are made from a rest of fabric. I have used this fabric to make small embroidery’s. The series is called: The Red Pines, and contains a mono print on fabric, with a backing of felt and embroidered with the sewing machine. There are not so big.

Panels

White version
With walnut ink

Soms kan iets ook te goed dekken. Voor mijn vakantie had ik deze panelen gemaakt en ze bewerkt met latex. Dit heeft echter te goed gedekt en was te wit uitgepakt. Ik had echter van iemand een klein zakje walnut inkt gekregen waar ik nog niets mee gedaan had. Het was zo’n klein zakje dat ik nog dacht, daar heb ik ook niet zoveel aan tot ik de gebruiksaanwijzing ging lezen. Het was een halve theelepel oplossen in een kopje water, nou daar zaten ontzettend veel halve theelepels in…Ik heb de panelen dus met walnut inkt behandeld en daarna met embossingpoeder. Dit is het resultaat.

Sometimes it could happen that the paint covers too well. Before I went on a holiday I made these panels and covered them with latex. This covered too well and the result was too white. Someone gave me a little bag with walnut ink which I hadn’t used yet. It was such a small bag that I taught I couldn’t do anything with it, till I read the description. It was a half teaspoon in one tea cup, and there where lots of half tea spoons in it….I covered the panels with walnut ink and put some embossing powder on it. This is the result.

Ironing

Verven/ Dyeing

Vandaag was het redelijk goed weer tot een uur of drie en daar heb ik gretig gebruik van gemaakt. Ik heb eindelijk de Hongaarse verf weer gevonden die ik in
La Bourboule had gekocht vorig jaar. Dus ik ben de hele dag door in de weer geweest met stof verven en tussendoor met embossen en internetten. De verkoper daagde me uit de verf te kopen vorig jaar, volgens hem was hij beter dan de meeste textielverven. Hij was zo overtuigend, dat ik besloot het een kans te geven. Ik verf al 15 jaar met diverse soorten en merken maar dit heb ik nog nooit meegemaakt. Bij wijze van test heb ik in ieder verfbad diverse soorten stof gedaan. Volgens de gebruiksaanwijzing moest het een kwartier koken met een lepel zout erbij. In het begin leek de kleur heel flets maar na een kwartier was hij echt donkerder en nu komt het vreemdste, bij het uitspoelen kwam er nauwelijks verf vrij. De kleuren zijn erg mooi en heel natuurlijk. Mocht je deze verf tegenkomen, het is zeker een aanrader. De rest van de avond sta ik dus te strijken, dat is het enige nadeel.

Today the weather was good till almost 3 o’clock and I really take advantage off that. I finally found the Hungarian dye again that I had bought last year in La Bourboule. So I was dyeing fabric the whole day and in the mean while busy with embossing and internet. The salesman challenged me to buy the dye, he said it was better than many other and because he was so convincing I gave it a try. I dye fabric for almost 15 years with all kinds of dye and all kinds of brands, but this I have never seen. As a test I put several sorts of fabric in each dye. The description said it had to dye for 15 minutes with one spoon of salt. At the beginning the colour looked pale but after 15 minutes it was really darker and, that’s the strange thing, with rinsing them into water there came nearly no dye off. The colour are beautiful and very natural. If you come across this paint, it sure is worth while. The rest of the evening I shall spend ironing, that’s the only disadvantage.

Wat ik deze vakantie ook nog heb gedaan is een hoop tags gemaakt. Ik vond het gewoon een leuk en ontspannend karweitje, heerlijk om tussendoor te doen. Ze zijn bestemd om aan mijn quilts te hangen bij de tentoonstelling en ook als labels voor mijn etsy artikelen. Ik weet nog niet precies wanneer die etsy shop er gaat komen, maar het is een van mijn doelen voor dit jaar. Maar als er iemand leuk vind om een tag te ruilen? Ik wil vanaf hier ook Sue B. ,Terri, Lynda, Carol and Margareth heel erg veel succes wensen met hun nieuwe project Fibre and Stitch online magazine. Ik wordt zeker abonnee en kan niet wachten tot het eerste nummer uit is!!!

What I also did during this holiday is made a lot of tags. It was just a nice and relaxing job, lovely to do between other things. I shall be using them for my quilts at the exhibition or as a tag for my etsy articles. I don’t know exactly when my etsy shop is ready, it is one of my goals for this year. But, if somebody likes to trade a tag? I want to wish from here, Sue B, Terri, Lynda, Carol and Margareth lots of success with there new project Fibre and Stitch online magazine. Boutis from France

Door het corresponderen met de Franse dames kreeg ik vaak de klacht te horen dat er in Frankrijk geen materiaal te krijgen is. Dat wilde ik natuurlijk zelf ook ontdekken. Ik kan niet over het westen van Frankrijk spreken (dat staat nog op mijn verlanglijstje) maar de Oostkant en een groot deel van het Zuiden heb ik wel bezocht. Uitteraard kun je tijdens de grote festivals zoals Val d’Argent, Lyon en La Bourboulle van allerlei materiaal kopen. De franse winkels die er dan staan zijn, verdeeld over een groot land als Frankrijk erg mager en dan zijn dat vaak specifiek patchworkwinkels. Stoffenwinkels vind je niet zoveel, ze zijn vaak gecombineerd met gordijnstoffen, hobbywinkels ben ik tot nu toe nauwelijks tegen gekomen, alleen waar mijn vader woont in de Haute Marne zit een grote winkel die echt van alles verkoopt. Maar tegenwoordig gaat het in Nederland net zo. Alle kleinere wol en fourniturenzaken/ stoffenwinkels verdwijnen. Nu ook de quilthype van een aantal jaren geleden ook weer over is heeft ook menig quiltwinkel zijn deuren moeten sluiten. Hobbywinkels houden het soms maar een paar jaar vol en de stoffen vinden langzaam hun weg naar de markt, dat schijnt lonender te zijn. Dus op zoek naar alternatieven, en op een moment dat ik het niet meer verwachtte stuitte ik ineens toch op een hobbywinkel in Cluses, de oppervlakte was niet zo heel groot maar ze hadden er enorm veel, van zijdeverf spullen tot scrapbook materiaal en breiwol, distressinkt, het nieuwste van het nieuwste. Maar als je in het Noorden van Frankrijk woont ga je niet zomaar even 6 uur ervoor rijden. Heel logisch, dus de alternatieven, zijn toch de Brico, de speelgoedwinkel en de kantoorboekhandel waarschijnlijk. Een ding is zeker, het prikkelt je creativiteit. Rond sommige flessen mousserende wijn zit prachtig koperfolie, in de kantoorboekhandel vond ik een geweldige gelmarker (goudkleurig met een lekker dikke punt) raffia in allerlei kleuren en mooi handgeschept papier. Oke, bij ons gaat het allemaal iets makkelijker, je vindt vlugger een hobbywinkel en postorderen via internet is ook bij veel winkels ingeburgerd. Op één ding ben ik echter heel jaloers, de franse winkels hebben een uitgebreid assortiment hobbytijdschriften tegen heel redelijke prijzen, daar moet toch ook een reden voor zijn? Leuke tips/ winkels zijn altijd welkom! Het allermooiste wat ik overigens gekocht heb in deze vakantie is een echte franse Boutis!!!!

Bye mailing with the French I often get to hear the complain that there’s hard to find material in France. I wanted to see that for myself. I can’t talk about the west of France (that is on my wish list) but I did searched at the East and part of the South. Off course, at the big festivals like Val d’Argent, Lyon en La Bourboulle you can buy lots of stuff. The French shops who are there are divided over a big country like France very less, and those are only the patchwork shops. Fabric shops you don’t find seldom, they are often combined with curtain fabrics. Hobby shops I have hardly seen, except where my father lives at the Haute Marne, there is a big shop which sells almost anything. But presently it is in Holland the same, all small wool and haberdashery (this comes from the dictionary, never heard of it) and fabric shops are disappearing. Now the quilt hype from a couple of years ago is over, many quilt shops had to close also. Hobby shops are just lasting a few years and fabrics find there way to the market, it is more worth I guess. So looking for alternatives, at a moment that I didn’t expect it anymore I just bombed in on a hobby shop in Cluses. It was not a big shop but they had lot’s of stuff, from silk dyeing to scrapbooking and knitting wool, distressinkt, all the new things. But if you are living in the north of France, you don’t drive for six hours for a shop. So you have to find the material elsewhere. The Brico, the toy store and the book shop probably. One thing is for sure, it teases you to be creative. Round some bottles of wine you find beautiful copper foil, in the bookshop I found this great gel marker (gold with a tick tip)raffia in all colours and beautiful hand shaped paper. It is true , in Holland it is more easy to find a hobby store (in almost every city) and ordering by internet is also very easy, most shops offer this service. There’s one thing that I am very jealous; French stores have such a large assortment of hobby magazines for very good prizes, there must be a reason. Every good tip/ shop address is always appreciated! The best buy I bought this holiday is a real French Boutis!!!!

Trading

mono prints

Na alle swaps van de laatste tijd heb ik weer maar flink wat ATC’s bijgemaakt. Na al die grote lappen quilts een hele verademing om weer even klein bezig te werken. Ik wil proberen om nog wat ATC’s met België te ruilen. Ik heb Duitsland, Engeland, Frankrijk, USA, Australië en ook Schotland in mijn verzameling zitten, maar dan houd het op. Italië of Spanje zou ook heel leuk zijn. Als er iemand tips heeft om dit voor elkaar te krijgen of iemand weet? Spaans kan ik helaas niet, dus de voertaal moet in Engels, Duits of Frans zijn.

After al the swaps from the past time I have made a lot of extra ATC’s. After the big quilts it is a real relieve to work on something small again. I will try to trade some ATC’s with Belgium. I already have Germany, England, France, USA, Australia and even Scotland in my collection, but that’s where it ends. Italy or Spain should be nice also. If anyone has some tips how to achieve that or now somebody? I don’t speak Spanish, so the language has to be English, German or French.

Creative Recycling II

This is what I call recycling, I made this picture at an exhibition in Waalre. It is a pity that I don't know who the artist is anymore. He recycles this old sewing machines into real art. With gesso and paint etc. Allright that is something quiet different, but it shows my understanding of the word recycling. I love this work!!

Terug naar Val Holmes, eerlijk gezegd valt het me een beetje tegen, misschien omdat ik zelf heel andere ideeën heb bij recycling. In hoofdstuk 1 bv recycling Fibre Waste behandeld ze het werken met Angelina en het maken van vilt. Dit valt wat mij betreft niet echt onder recycling, maar misschien zie ik het verkeerd? Eigenlijk vind ik het boek pas echt interessant vanaf hoofdstuk 6, recycling wood, metal and mineral waste. Dit is meer wat ik in gedachten heb, strandvondsten, afgedankt metaal zoals blikjes etc. En wat ik echt heel mooi vind zijn de doosjes op blz. 108…. Ik heb een beetje dubbel gevoel bij het boek, ik ben er nog niet echt zeker van dat ik een goede koop heb gedaan. Ik had er iets meer van verwacht voor omdat ik het werk van Val Holmes altijd waardeer.

Back to Val Holmes, to be honest, the book is a little disappointing. Maybe that’s because I had a very different idea by the word recycling? At chapter I for example, recycling fibre waste; she talks about felting and Angelina. That’s not recycling for me, or maybe I see it wrong? Actually the book becomes interesting really interesting to me at chapter 6, recycling wood, metal and mineral waste. That’s more what I had in mind. Beach founds, like cans…. What I really like are the boxes on page 108….I have some mixed feelings about the book, I don’t know if it’s a right buy. I did expected something more, especially because I like the work of Val Holmes very much.

Een van de boeken die ik tijdens mijn vakantie gelezen heb is het boek: Creative Recycling van Val Holmes. Ik had het al een tijdje in huis maar nog geen tijd gehad om het echt te lezen. Meestal ontdek ik dan dat er toch meer in zit als de foto’s op het eerste gezicht zeggen. Ze heeft het boek onderverdeeld in verschillende hoofdstukken en in ieder hoofdstuk wordt een ander materiaal gerecycled. Garens, Stof, Borduurwerk, Papier en zelfs Hout. Ik ben zelf een voorstander van recyclen, er wordt al genoeg weggegooid op deze wereld, tegenwoordig worden er zelfs dingen bewust met korte levensduur gemaakt. Toen mijn mobiele telefoon na 2 jaar kuren begon te vertonen en ik er mee naar de winkel ging zei de verkoper (met een gezicht dat boekdelen sprak) Maar mevrouw hij is ook al twee jaar oud! Dit is jaren geleden gebeurd, omdat onze zoon op dat moment in die branche werkte hadden wij al heel vroeg een mobieltje en waren wij dus zeer geschokt. Ja, dus, hij is NOG maar 2 jaar oud. Tegenwoordig is het al heel normaal dat ze gewoon na twee jaar verruild worden voor een nieuw exemplaar. Kortom, leve de recycling! Maar ik dwaal af en dit stuk wordt te lang, morgen Val Holmes deel II

One of the books I read during my holiday was the book Creative Recycling by Val Holmes. I had it for a while but hadn’t the time to read it yet. When I read a book I mostly discover that there is more in it than the pictures shows. I sometimes think I got the technique figured out but when I read it, it’s a little different than I aspect. Val dived the book in several chapters. In every chapters there’s a different material used. Fibres, Fabric, Embroidery, Paper, Plastic and even wood. I do believe in recycling, this days there are so many things wasted and threw away on this world. They actually make things with a shorter lifetime so that they can sell more of it. When my cell phone was doing weird things after 2 years I taught it might be broke and I went to the store with it. The salesman said (and it’s the way he looked at me) But, it’s is two years old! This happens years ago, because my son worked in that branch at the time we had a cell phone very early, so we where shocked. Yes, So, it is ONLY two years old. Now a days it is very normal that they only last for two years and then you change it for a new one. So, cheers to recycling! But, I stray of my subject and this post is gonna be too long, tomorrow Val Holmes Part II

Fiasco

En waar begin ik nu? Ik heb enorm veel werk verzet met oog op de komende tentoonstellingen (het zijn er inmiddels al twee geworden en waarschijnlijk tegelijkertijd) Dit kwam vlak voor mijn vakantie binnen dus ik wist dat ik veel werk te doen had. De 1e week van mijn vakantie had ik last van een soort ‘writers block’ Nu had ik eindelijk volop de tijd om te werken en het leek wel of mijn hele inspiratiebron leeg was. Ik ben begonnen met de 1e van de coffee/ blauwe mono prints. Dit liep eigenlijk al snel vast met niet het gewenste resultaat. Na een hoop geworstel (daarover meer deze week) heb ik hem in tweeën geknipt maar ook dit gaf niet het geplande resultaat. Na hier een paar dagen mee te hebben geworsteld kwam ik tot de conclusie dat het niets werd en dat ik wel verder moest met iets anders wilde ik aan het eind van de vakantie iets af hebben. Hierbij mijn mislukking, ik denk dat ik er weer maar verf op ga zetten, wie weet wat er dan uitkomt. Ik vind uiteindelijk het kleurcontrast achteraf toch te groot maar één keer bezig is het niet meer uit te halen….
En als ik dan zie wat jullie allemaal gedaan hebben terwijl ik er niet was !!! Ik probeer nog steeds alles te lezen van de afgelopen twee weken, maar het is zo veel…..neem me niet kwalijk als ik niet overal commentaar bij kan zetten. Ik zou het graag doen maar dan kwam ik niet meer aan werken toe.

And where do I start? I have done lots of work because of the coming exhibitions (there are now two of them and probably at the same time) This came the day before we went on a holiday, so I knew I had to work hard. The first week from the holiday I was suffering on a sort of ‘writers block’ now I did had the time to work and it looked like my inspiration was completely gone. I started with the first of my coffee/ blue mono prints. But it wasn’t what I wanted, so I struggled (I shall tell all about this later) and decided to cut it in half but this was also not what I wanted. After struggling for a couple of days, it was clear to me that it wasn’t working and if I want some work done this holiday, I should move on to the next project. This is my fiasco, I think I am gonna put some paint on it, who knows what it turns out. I think the colour contrast is too heavy afterwards, but when you have started it is hard to rip it out again…. And when I see what you all have done, when I was gone!!!!!! I am still trying to read all of it but it is so much…so don’t be angry if I don’t comment. I should like to comment very much but if I do that, I have no time left to work.

Dank jullie allemaal voor jullie hartelijke welkomstwoorden! Het kostte wat moeite vandaag weer aan het werk te gaan, maar het doet me wel goed zoveel blogvrienden te hebben. Mijn waardering is enorm. Ik zal proberen de hele week een ander stuk van de afgelopen weken te laten zien, eerst moet ik proberen alles hier weer op orde te krijgen. Ik heb nog een hoop uit te pakken en te organiseren. Laat ik beginnen met mijn post: Ik heb enorm veel ATC’s gekregen toen ik op vakantie was. De postbode moet zich hebben afgevraagd wat ik toch met Frankrijk heb, want de meeste pakjes waren uit Frankrijk. Hartelijk bedankt allemaal! Super! Het is wat onpersoonlijker op deze manier maar het waren er te veel ineen.

Thank you all very much for your kind welcome words! I was difficult to go to work again this morning, but it pleases me so much to have so many blogfriends. My appreciation is big! I will try whole week to show each a piece of the past weeks. First I have to get things organised. I have a lot of unpacking and reorganizing to do. So at first my mail when I came back:I have received a lot of ATC’s when I was on holiday. The postman should have wondered what I had with France because most of them came from France. Thank you all very well!! Super! It is a little impersonal this way, but there where to many ATC's.

I am back!!!!

Ik ben er weer!!!! Heerlijke vakantie gehad, veel gewerkt, ik kan helaas nog niet alles laten zien want een groot deel moet eerst nog recht worden gesneden en afgewerkt. Het is nu eenmaal niet handig om op vakantie een snijmat mee te nemen, een naaimachine is tot daar aan toe. :-) Ik heb er weer echt zin in de komende 3 maanden, in september gaan we namelijk weer op vakantie! Goed verdeeld dit jaar, 2 x 2 weken, dat is om de rest van het jaar te compenseren. Hierbij een aantal impressie foto’s….

I am back!!! Lovely holiday, lot’s of work done, unfortunately I can’t show everything because a lot of the work need to be cut in shape first and need some finishing. Actually it is not so handy taking a cutting mat with you on a holiday, a sewing machine is the limit :-) I am really looking forward to just the coming three months because we are going on a holiday again in September. Very well planned this year, that’s to compensate the rest of the year. Here’s an impression

Laatste blog, alles is gepakt en klaar om ingeladen te worden. Ik zal alle leuke mail en contacten heel erg missen maar ik ga ook heel erg genieten. Lekker twee weken ongestoord kunnen werken, dat geeft echt een kik. Ik heb nog van alles zitten verzinnen hoe ik misschien toch nog post kan schrijven maar in Zuid Frankrijk heb ik vorig jaar niet zoveel Internet cafés kunnen ontdekken, al zitten we in een andere streek dus wie weet? Ik vraag me wel heel erg af hoe dat nu moet met alle post van mijn favoriete blogs, hoe krijg ik die allemaal gelezen na de vakantie

:-) Voor iedereen die al weg is als ik terugkom: een hele fijne zomer met veel inspiratie.

Last post, everything is packed en ready to be loaded. I shall miss al the nice mail and contacts very much but I am also gonna enjoy myself very much. Two weeks working without interruption, that gives really a good feeling. I have thought about a lot of ways how I could write a post from France but I didn’t saw many internet café’s last year, although we are in a different part of France, so who knows? I just wonder how about all the posts from my favourite blogs, how can I ever read all of them after the holidays, :-)For everyone that is gone on holiday when I come back: have a nice summer with lots of inspiration.

Dangerous

Ik doe er al dagen over om dit heel kleine werkje af te maken. Het bestaat uit een laag handgeschept papier en twee lagen vilt voor de stevigheid. Het handgeschepte papier heb ik geverfd met acrylverf en daarna bewerkt met stempels. Ik heb het geheel op de machine doorgequilt en bewerkt. Op de een of andere manier wil het maar niet vlotten en ik had het nog graag af willen hebben. Soms ben ik te hard voor mezelf, ik pest mezelf gewoon door iets zo graag af te willen hebben dat het het geheel niet ten goede komt. Het is niet slim, ik weet het….maar ik wil het dan dolgraag uit mijn hoofd hebben en doorgaan met het volgende. Mijn interesse is dan weer al in zoverre verlegd dat de concentratie weg is, vaak komt het omdat ik dan al helemaal weg ben van wat ik nog meer onder handen heb. Heel gevaarlijk….

I am working for days on this little piece and it still isn’t finished. It contains hand shaped paper and two layers of felt so it is very firm. The hand shaped paper have I painted with acrylic paint and after that stamped. I have quilted the whole piece by machine and embellished it. One way or another it won’t finish and I wanted to finish it this week. Sometimes I am very hard for myself; I am teasing myself by wanting to finish something so badly that it doesn’t do justice at the whole thing. That is not the right way, I know…. but I want to get it out of my head sometimes so I can go on to the next thing. My interest is than already gone to the next piece, where I am working on and where I am quiet exiting about. Very dangerous….
