The TIF assignment from this month is balance. It is not a very difficult assignment; you can go all kind of different directions on this one. Unfortunately I don’t have much time this month, so I doubted a lot how to solve this. Yesterday I was working on my drawing table and I suddenly I knew it….I bought some metal paint recently and some mtal effect.Together they are a perfect balance for RUST! I painted some pieces of Lutrador with it and indeed, after some hours they changed in rust, they even smell like rust! Because I owe some ATC’s to some people, I made ATC’s from it. In the ATC’s the theme balance is also returning.

TIF update June
After I came back from holiday I find it rather hard to catch up on TIF again. The assignment from June is very difficult for me, this involves stashes. That is something that most Textile artists have plenty off. Every rag, every thread is gonna be used again. Even the tiniest pieces can be re-used. Sharon says that: stash is full of possibilities. While material is uncut it is rich with possible uses. Once you have committed to using it the material moves from being something that is full of potential to a project. So this month the idea to think about is stories that are and stories that are possible. What should I do with that? It is probably because my English fails here, because I don’t see the link? That’s why I find it very hard to translate this in a piece of art. Maybe I choose the colour palette this time. This is the fabric I choose, it is a fabric I made in Rijswijk. Evey colour is in it except the green, but that can't be a problem.. To catch up on TIF again, I think I am gonna make something small and hope I can catch up. Maybe a postcard or something likes that? By the way I forgot to mention that I wanted to use the fabric book Against War for TIF May, because that is also about passion.

TIF May
The TIF assignment for May is another great find from Sharon. How do you see yourself as an artist? That was her first question and the definite question was: What do you call yourself and why? Well, the question is the easiest part from this assignment, but how do I translate this in a piece of Art? I am not a person that is easily put in a category, so if anyone asks me, I usually say I am an artist, I make fiberart and mixed media. That is very vague off course, so like Sharon I always try to explain my work but that doesn’t say that people actually understand what you are doing. That is why I like exhibitions so much; most of the visitors are really surprised: Is that textile too? Is one of the most frequently asked questions. Years ago I called myself an Art Quilter, but for me it doesn’t satisfy anymore. I have the feeling that I limit myself to call myself that way, because by calling myself an Art Quilter I set some boundaries: when is it an art quilt and when is it mixed media, and the most important question is: why would I put it in a category? If I would describe myself without a name tag; I would say: I am curious and hungry, for new materials, possibilities, ways to express myself and most of all: I am very passionate about my work. It is there when I awake and it’s there when I go to bed. It is always there :-) My father used to work from 8 till 11 o clock in the evening, there was a time that I couldn’t imagine to do something like that, but now I see myself turn out the light in my study very often at 11. All right, now that I set my thoughts straight and clear (these assignments are great for my creative thinking) I choose for myself this, my TIF May is about PASSION….and I am gonna take it with me on my holiday…so no updates in the mean time….

Part II
I doubted a second what I would show you first and I choosed for the second piece from TIF. This piece I painted gold at first. Thanks to Mieke I got received a Thai news paper, I love the letters. I just hope there is nothing weird to read:-) Like the other piece, this one is a lot darker in real it is so hard to photograph.

Recycled
Take it Further…Ik ben echt een stapje verder gegaan.
This time I took Sharon B very literally. Take it Further…I took the piece one step further. Anyone who knows me, know that I am not fond of ice flowers and anything that has to do with cold. I was not completely satisfied with the TIF result, not actually my colours but confirm the assignment. So Sunday evening I cut the piece in half and put some paint over it. After an hour I regret it already, this was also not what I wanted. So I decided to add another layer, a bit pity for the quilting but otherwise it stays on the shelf also, so who cares about the quilting? I put a layer of black Angel wire on both the pieces; but because I painted both the pieces in a different colour this also mixed with the background. I have to finish the second part tonight, this is the first part. You probably all think I lost my mind, but I am very pleased with it:-) In real it is much darker, except for the hart. On the picture it seems more stained than it is.

TIF February Frost
Down this post you find my TIF February. The theme I choosed was Ice flowers. Unfortunately it shines so bright that I couldn´t take normal pictures so I made a slideshow of it from a side vieuw. The blue you see is the back, you can see how it is quilted on the back.

TIF February
The assignement from TIF February; What are old enough to remember? Sharon gave an example; about remembering old vinyl records. I remember that one! Off course you could also choose for the colour scheme but I like this better, it opens the creative flow. I really have to think about this one; what I remember also is: the revival of the flower power. When I was 9 years old we all wear denim jeans with embroidered flowers again. Music, but I often don’t know if I remember the original music or the records from my parent’s years later. What I certainly remember are the Saturday afternoon movies on the BRT. In that time all black and white. I really loved that old movies, me and my friends have seen a lot of classic movies. My favourite movies are “knight” movies; I still like the ones with historical or old costumes because of the colours and the designs, the little details. They inspire me very much, not only the ones with the beautiful Sissi dresses but also a movie like Troy, the armours they wear!!! But, how do I develop this?

Something completely else, maybe I can work this out, is I remember the time we didn’t had central heating. Mornings near the gas oven, most of the time I was on top of it (I always was a chilly person) When you wake up in the morning, and you reached you’re head from under the blankets you saw the ice flowers on the window. That is something I can develop!!! So this month I am gonna work on this theme, I think I call it: Frost. So, that’s of my back…..:-) With Christmas I made a couple of cards in this theme, this is one of them. Unfortunately I don’t have the fabric anymore, so I have to think of something else.
