Bleach

Dit is de quilt die ik dit weekend heb afgemaakt. De basis is een zwarte stof die ik gebleekt had met bleekwater. Het is grappig om te zien hoe iedere zwarte stof weer anders op bleekwater reageert. Deze stof kreeg na het bleken een prachtige terra kleur. Ik had besloten er niet teveel aan te doen maar slechts de lijnen van de stof te volgen. Voor de randen heb ik organza gebruikt. Een tijdje geleden hadden wij in de textielgroep al een discussie over het stoppen van het bleekproces. Tot nu toe heb ik alleen water als stopmiddel gebruikt, maar er zijn een aantal leden van mijn groep die de ervaring hebben dat er toch gaten in de stof kunnen vallen. Deze stof heb ik ongeveer twee jaar geleden al eens gebleekt en ik heb hem eens aan een nauwkeurig onderzoek onderworpen. Ik kan er niets vreemds aan ontdekken en omdat ik me afvraag of het nu nog zin heeft om deze lap met een stopper te behandelen na twee jaar, heb ik toch de gok genomen, mochten er in het gebleekte oranje toch nog gaten vallen kan dat verval ook een spannend effect opleveren lijkt mij. Ik vind verval op zich toch een mooi proces. Mocht ik in de toekomst weer stof gaan bleken denk ik dat ik toch maar op safe ga spelen en wel een stopper gebruik.

This is the quilt that I finished this weekend. The base is a black fabric that I bleached with normal household bleach. It is funny to see how every black fabric reacts different on bleach. This one turned into a beautiful terra colour. I decided to keep it simple, just following the lines in the fabric. For the endings I used organza. A while ago we had a discussion in my textile group about stopping the bleach process. Till now I only used water to stop the process, but some of the members of our group had the experience that there could appear holes in it. This fabric I treated with bleach about two years ago. I examined the fabric carefully, but I can’t see anything strange about it. Because I wondered if it makes sense to use a stopper after two years, I decided to gamble and use it anyway, would there appear some holes in the orange part, I think it can be a very nice side effect. I like destruction….When I decided to do so more bleaching in the future I think I take the safe way and use a stopper.

ATC IV Voyage

De laatste ATC serie is de serie: Voyage. Ik heb deze serie zo genoemd vanwege de touwtjes. Het leek me leuk om een eyelet er in te maken en een koordje er door, maar toen ze eenmaal af waren leken ze eigenlijk net op labels. Met de vakantie nog in mijn hoofd gingen mijn gedachten uiteraard naar kofferlabels, vandaar de titel Voyage.
De basis is handgeverfde stof, bedrukt met een mono print en hierna bewerkt met stempels en borduursteken.

The last ATC series is called: Voyage. I gave them this title because of the rope. I thought it would be fun to make an eyelet in it and put a cord threw it, but when they where finished they looked more like tags. With the holidays still on my mind, I thought suitcase labels…. And that is where the title Voyage came from. The base is hand dyed fabric, mono printed and after that stamped and embroidered.

ATC III

As you maybe noticed it already, I finally accomplished to make some maps of my work. Now you can see all pictures in their own category and you don't have too browse to the whole blog anymore.
I am pretty pleased with it. It was quiet a job. It took me whole Saturday evening to download them in the right map and this morning when I checked, I saw that there where some pictures double, so I reorganize them again. You can find them on the right side of the blog.

De derde serie ATC’s heb ik Tule genoemd. Op de rommelmarkt in La Voulte (Frankrijk) had ik een geweldig mooie kantachtige stof gekocht, soms lijkt het goud, soms ook zilver. Een andere leuke bijkomstigheid is dat er dicht geweven stukken in zitten en open stukken die je helemaal uit kunt rafelen. Ik heb er dan ook al veelvuldig gebruik van gemaakt, ook in fabric book I. Er zat vijf meter op de rol dus ik kan nog wel even vooruit. Tevens heb ik nog een aantal meter zwarte kant gekocht en een aantal mooie koperen ornamenten. Inspiratie genoeg dus. De basis bestaat uit hand gemarmerde stof (mijn laatste stuk, moet nodig nog eens wat bij maken) gestempeld en geborduurd.

The third series ATC’s I called: Tule. On a flee market in La Voulte (France) I bought a beautiful lace fabric, the colour seems to change, sometimes it looks like gold, the other time it looks like silver. Another thing that is a nice side-issue is that there are some pieces that are really firm and some pieces have an open structure that you can easily torn loose. I used it a lot already, like in fabric book I. There was five metre on the cylinder, so I can go on for a while. I also bought a few metre of black lace and some nice copper ornaments. Inspiration enough. The base is formed by hand marbled fabric, (my last piece, so I desperate need to make more) stamped and embroidered.

Soft Weather

Het weer was heerlijk zacht vandaag dus ik heb gauw nog wat stof geverfd. In Val d'Argent kwam ik de Hongaarse verf weer tegen waar ik het een tijd geleden over had. De kleuren zijn nogal apart geworden, er zit veel kleurcontrast in, maar daar hou ik juist van. Ik ben benieuwd wat ze doen als ze droog zijn. Ook kwam de post met een boek wat ik een tijd geleden had besteld bij Quilting Arts. Het ziet er geweldig uit. Helaas geen tijd om te lezen, er was nog genoeg werk te doen. De tweede vakantie quilt heb ik vandaag af gemaakt, die houden jullie nog te goed, even als de 3e en 4e serie ATC's.

The weather was very soft today, so I did some quick fabric dyeing. When I was in Val d'Argent I came across the Hungarian dye again, wich I mentioned a while ago. The colour are a bit strange, there's a lot of contrast in it. I like that. I am very curious what they look like when they are completely dry. The mail came also today with a book I ordered some time ago on Quilting Arts. It looks great, but no time to read, there was plenty enough work to do. I finished the second holiday quilt today, but that's for later on, so are the third and fourth series ATC's.

Damage

De derde en vierde serie ATC’s bewaar ik even voor later anders wordt het zo saai. Eerst één van de quilts waar ik aan gewerkt heb in de vakantie. Iedereen vraagt zich af of ik wel vakantie heb gehouden deze twee weken. Wel, zeer zeker! Dit is voor mij vakantie, lekker ongestoord kunnen werken, geen invloed van werkstress etc. We zijn in totaal 16 dagen weggeweest waarvan er 4 uitvallen vanwege het reizen, gemiddeld 5 uur per dag gewerkt van ’s morgens 8 tot 1 uur ongeveer, waarna we lekker uit zijn gegaan of gewoon gerelaxt hebben. Ik heb ook 12 boeken uitgelezen deze vakantie (bijna iedere dag 1, ik lees heel snel) Lekker op het terras in de zon, wijntje, franse kaasjes, uitgebreid gekookt (mijn andere grote hobby) echt vakantie dus! Maar nu terug naar de quilt, deze ondergrond had ik een tijd geleden gemaakt. Het is handgeverfde katoen, bewerkt met een monodruk. Ik heb hem eerst gequilt en daarna ben ik hem weer te lijf gegaan met een schaar en een staalborstel. Hij heeft nog geen titel maar ik denk dat het zoiets als Damage moet worden. Ik twijfel nog even of hij af is en of ik iets aan de randen ga doen. Ik had nog een soortgelijke sandwich meegenomen op vakantie (waar ik niet aan toe ben gekomen) In eerste instantie was ik van plan deze in dezelfde stijl te doen maar ook daar zit ik aan te twijfelen. Meestal als ik zoveel twijfels heb bij een project kan het nog wel eens zijn dat het zijn eigen leven gaat leiden, ineens valt dan het kwartje en wordt het iets heel anders. Ik denk dat ik hem eerst eens een poosje op het rek ga hangen, misschien kijk ik er na een paar weken heel anders tegenaan.

The third and the fourth series ATC’s I keep for later on, otherwise it is getting boring. First one of the quilts that I worked on during the holiday. Everyone asked if I did have a holiday these two weeks. Well certainly! This means holiday for me, working without being interrupted, no work stress influence etc. We been away for a total of 16 days, four days are fall out because of the travelling, so I could work about 5 hours a day, from 8 to 1 o’clock, after that we went out or just relaxed. I also read 12 books this holiday (one a day, I am a fast reader) Very comfortable on the terrace in the sun, nice glass of wine, French cheese, did some extensive cooking (my other passion) a real vacation! But back to this quilt, this background I made a while ago. The base is hand dyed cotton with a mono print. I first quilted it and than I took a scissor and a wire brush to fight it again. It doesn’t got a title yet, but I think I call it something like Damage. I am still doubting if it is finished and what I will do with the borders. I took a likewise quiltsandwich with me on holiday (couldn’t find time for that one) At first I wanted to use the same style on it, now I am doubting also on that part. Usually when I got so many doubts , a project could start a life of its own, the penny drops and it becomes something complete different. I think I hang it away on the rack for a while, maybe I see different things after a few weeks.

ATC II

De tweede serie ATC’s heb ik nog geen naam gegeven. Ze zijn gemaakt van zijdepapier. Ik heb het eerst verkreukeld en daarna op de kaart geplakt. Je kunt hiervoor ook gesso gebruiken. Helaas heb ik maar weinig kunnen ruilen in France. Iedereen was al uit geruild vrijdag. Jammer….

The second series of ATC’s have no name yet. They are made of silk paper. I crunched it first and than glued it onto the cardboard. You can also use gesso for this. It is a pity I couldn’t trade many ATC’s in France. On Friday everyone was already done trading…..

ATC part I

Uiteraard heb ik niet alleen fabric books gemaakt tijdens de vakantie….ik heb tevens vier ATC series gemaakt en een aantal quilts. De quilts moeten allemaal nog op maat gesneden worden en verder afgewerkt, daarover later meer. Dit is de eerste serie ATC’s met als titel: Vintage.
De basis is handgeverfde stof.

Of course I did more than fabric books alone during the holiday…I also made four series of ATC’s and some quilts. The quilts need some finishing first, I have to cut them in the right size, so I tell you al about that later. This is the first series ATC’s , the title is: Vintage
The base is formed by hand dyed fabric.

Part II Fabricbook Oceanic

Ook fabricbook I is eindelijk af. De titel is Oceanic, wat betekend in het Nederlands Oceaan of onmetelijk. Ik heb hierin heel veel gebruik gemaakt van schelpen en foto's van de zee. Er zitten diverse vakantie souveniers in, steentjes uit Porlezza, kant uit de Drome, papier uit Privas en de andere schelpjes komen gewoon hier uit Zeeland.

Fabric book I is also finished. The title is Oceanic, which means in Dutch Ocean or immense. I used a lot of shells and pictures of the sea. There are a lot of holiday souvenirs in it, little stones from Porlezza, lace from the Drome, paper from Privas and the other shells are just simply from Zeeland. (where I live, we also have a lot of beaches)

Fabricbook Girls

En wat heb ik nu eigenlijk allemaal gedaan tijdens de vakantie? Jeetje, dat is nogal wat. Ik ben met twee fabric books bezig geweest in verschillende thema’s. De eerste is:
Girls and Secrets. De basis wordt gevormd door verschillende oude foto’s. Iedere vrouw heeft haar eigen geheimen, of deze nu worden gevormd door het geloof, geld, de gewone dagelijkse gang van zaken…wie weet wat er allemaal in een vrouw omgaat.
We hebben allemaal onze eigenaardigheden en bezigheden. Om een bepaalde rust er in te creëren heb ik zoveel mogelijk voor dezelfde achtergrond gekozen. De foto’s vertellen hun eigen verhaal, niet altijd wat het lijkt in eerste instantie. Daarom hou ik er van om fabric books te maken, er zit soms een boel symboliek en verhaal achter wat je op het eerste gezicht niet direct door hebt.
Morgen deel II

And what did I do during this holiday? Well, actually a lot. I’ve been busy with two fabric books in different themes. The first one is Girls and Secrets.
The base is formed by different old pictures. Every women has her own secrets, while it is based o believe, money, the usual domestic problems…who know what goes on in a woman’s head. We all have our own peculiarities or occupations. To bring a certain quietness in it; I choose the same background fabric. The pictures tell their own story, but not always what it seems at first sight. That why I like to make fabric books, there’s a lot of symbolic and stories behind it, which doesn’t show immediately.

Ik ben er weer! Het was een heerlijke vakante, goed weer, leuke omgeving.
Val d’ Argent was zoals altijd geweldig, al moet ik eerlijk zijn: in twee dagen had het misschien iets rustiger geweest maar 1 dag was ook genoeg. Ik heb bewuster gekeken waar ik echt naar toe wilde. Het leek wel of het aantal winkels dit jaar iets minder was, ik miste in ieder geval een paar van mijn favorieten. In ieder geval heeft het me een aantal mooie boeken opgeleverd. Het voordeel van ze aan het begin van de vakantie te kopen is dat ik alle tijd had om ze ook te lezen. Daarover morgen meer. Hierbij een aantal mooie sfeer foto’s.

I am back! It was a lovely holiday, nice weather, lovely places. Val d’ Argent was great as usual, although I have to admit: in two days it would be probably more relaxed but 1 day was also enough. I made better choices of what I really wanted to see. It looked like there where less sops this year, I missed some of my favorites. Anyway, I bought some beautiful books. The advantage of buying them at the beginning of my holiday is that I had time enough to read them. But more about that tomorrow. Here are some nice atmosphere pictures. It is funny writing in English again; it took some time to find the right words after all this French.

De laatste dan, we vertrekken morgenvroeg en zijn de 1e oktober weer terug! Ik zal jullie blogpost allemaal heel erg missen maar deze keer neem ik een laptop mee op vakantie naast de rest van alle zooi...dus wie weet, ben ik in de gelegenheid om nog iets te posten. Als de auto niet door zijn veren zakt zijn we zaterdag in Italy (voor ons de eerste keer) en de week er na zitten we op onze vertrouwde stek in de Drome. Mocht ik ooit de staatsloterij winnen koop ik daar een huis! Vooruit nog twee foto's ter inspiratie, hoop jullie allemaal in oktober weer te spreken. In ieder geval met een heleboel nieuw materiaal.

Allright, the last one, we leave tomorowmorning very early and be back around the first october! I 'll miss you're blog post very much but this time I take a laptop with me on my holiday neven all the other stuff, so who knows....Maybe I'll be in the opportunity to post something. When the car is not going threw his well sprung we are in Italy by Saturday (for us it is the first time) and the week afterwards we are on our useally place in the Drome (France) May I ever win this lottery I buy a house over there!
